In Memory of Fred "Gene" Gold
1939 - 2020
It is with great sadness today that Gold Family Farms, Inc. announces the passing of one of it’s founders Fred “Gene” Gold. Gene passed peacefully on Saturday, July 11, 2020 surrounded by his family. Gene along with his parents and siblings founded R&S Nursery and Merchandising over 50 years ago near Forest Grove, Oregon. Soon after the death of his brother Paul and realizing flat land was more conducive to hilly land for potted plants, the family relocated their operation to the current Hillsboro Location starting on about 80 acres then expanding to another 96 and 52 acres nearby. He dedicated his life to the nursery industry, his family and his church. He enjoyed participating in the Bonsai Society of Oregon. He was an avid woodworker and carver. Gene and his wife Karen served a mission to Nauvoo, Illinois for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although he retired in 2004, he continued to consult regularly with his sons who own and operate Gold Family Farms, Inc., just recently touring the farms on the 25th of June with his son and grandchildren.
Gene will be remembered for his hard working no-nonsense style, humorously for his fast and reckless driving through the fields and trying his hand and introducing topiaries and bonsai into the nursery mix.
Gold Family Farms, Inc. is now owned and operated by Steven and Joseph Gold on about 320 acres in the Hillsboro area, growing woody landscape, topiaries and ornamental plants. Gene is survived by his wife Karen P. Gold, 3 daughters, 4 sons, many grandchildren and his sister and former business partner Floris “Sally” Gold at R&S Nursery.
